ETR Associates, a private, non-profit, health education organization, is seeking a qualified person to join its Program Services Department as a Development Director for Foundation and Corporate Giving.

Telecommuting is okay. This position can be located anywhere in the greater Bay Area with travel to the main Scotts Valley office on a twice a week basis.

Education, Training and Research (ETR) Associates is a national center for publications, training, research and clearinghouse services in family life, and comprehensive health education, substance abuse prevention, HIV/AIDS prevention and tobacco use education and prevention. ETR’s publishing division publishes and distributes curricula, books and pamphlets in these areas for schools, clinics and youth-serving organizations across the country.

Overview

Reports to the Director of Business and Organizational Development.  Working closely with the CEO and Program Services Management, the Development Director for Foundation and Corporate Giving is responsible for the development and coordination of private funder development (primarily foundation and corporate funders), planning and activities for the agency; contributes to the development of communication materials; assists in the development of new resources and program opportunities; assists in the Division’s strategic planning process and provides data management/analysis services related to business planning. Has significant responsibility for building relationships with funding agencies and potential community partners.

Responsibilities and Duties

Resource Development and Strategic Planning
  • Research and keep abreast of priorities and initiatives of potential funders, primarily foundations and corporations, who provide leadership and expand resources relevant to ETR’s mission.
  • Develop and implement systems, strategies and tactics to significantly increase giving by foundations and corporations through grants, sponsorships, direct donations and matching donations.
  • Work with the CEO and Program Services Management and when appropriate, the Agency Executive Committee, to strategize about potential new funding streams as our partnerships and programs expand.  Collaborate with Agency Executive Team to incorporate fundraising with evolving marketing strategies.
  • Identify and cultivate relationships with new funding sources (primarily corporate and foundation); maintain on an on-going basis.
  • Identify and cultivate potential community and national partnerships.
  • Work with  CEO and Program Services Management and staff, and when appropriate, the Agency Executive Committee to generate and develop program directions and ideas.
  • Work with CEO and Program Services Management and when appropriate, the Agency Executive Committee, to assess market needs and program and funding trends.
  • Identify and develop new strategies for fund development.
  • Identify and track with the organization and work of Agency’s competitors.
  • Identify and research new program approaches to the Division’s work.

Funding Search and Proposal Development

  • Research and identify potential funders, primarily foundations and corporations, to support ETR’s programs and mission.
  • Develop and maintain a database of relevant corporate, foundation and other private funding sources.
  • Solicit and promote staff interest in corporate and foundation funding opportunities.
  • Identifies foundation and corporate prospects, and/or supplies leads and contacts to develop winning strategies for improving success rates for all submitted grants;
  • Research and write grant proposals, including budgets and all related materials.
  • Manage reporting system for grants, prepare time line and tracking system for proposals, prepare and distribute ongoing status reports. Review proposals for compatibility with ETR guidelines, including preparing a preliminary fiscal analysis as necessary.
  • Draft routine and complex correspondence to foundation program staff, including acknowledgments, letters of inquiry and thank you letters.
  • Review and explain RFP requirements; ensure concept and proposal are in compliance with sponsoring agency RFP guidelines.
  • Facilitate decision-making on potential projects.
  • Obtain and manage resources to support proposal development.
  • Identify and develop potential collaborators for ETR projects; maintain contact and prepare related agreements.
  • Working closely with staff and CFO, prepare/review budgets for new proposals.
  • Follow up initial foundation/corporation contacts with concept papers and/or proposals.
  • Facilitate and monitor proposal development teams and proposal production schedule.
  • May oversee and coordinate submission process including assembly, editing and proofing.
  • Draft proposal content as needed, particularly agency capacity statements.
  • Provide technical review and editing as needed.

Promotions and Communications

  • Work with internal and external resources, to develop collateral materials used in support of achieving the financial goals of the agency.
  • Prepare materials for Board presentations, including highlights of significant agency accomplishments, awards, and recognitions.

Contract Administration and Follow-Up

  • In conjunction with the CFO, prepare subcontracts.
  • Review contracts prior to signing.
  • In conjunction with CFO and project staff, conduct contract negotiations.
Business Planning and Analysis
  • Assist in working actively with staff in off-site offices to support them in business planning and resource development.
  • Follow-up on legal and accounting matters, as requested.
  • Participate in regular meetings with the Finance Department to review monthly reports and discuss other business matter pertinent to the Division.
  • Identify potential business problems and offer solutions.
  • Work with Development support staff to maintain accurate Division records.
  • Carry out special assignments related to new business development.
  • Research potential business models for Program Services’ commercial endeavors.

Other Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Assist in preparation for Board Meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Accountabilities

  • Keep CEO and Program Services Management informed of funding opportunities and proposal status.
  • Provide business analyses as requested.
  • Maintain on-going communication and oversight with respect to business development for the off-site offices.
  • Success in facilitating a smooth development process as well as timely submission of high quality proposals.
  • Success in working with others to develop funding ideas and grant submissions.
  • Demonstration of an in depth understanding of agency-wide activities and programs.
  • Takes initiative and works autonomously within team structure.
  • Provides leadership in issues of business planning, funder identification and assignment, fund administration and grant development.
  • Develops and maintains successful relations with potential funders and community partners.
  • Timely submission of all progress reports and contract amendments.
  • Stays current on significant research, program and funding trends in areas related to ETR’s work.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with colleagues and outside agencies.
  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Follow and support agency policies and procedures.
  • Success in securing corporate and foundation resources for the agency.
  • Success in developing and maintaining a database of relevant corporate, foundations and other private funding sources.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Health or related field required.
  • Minimum 5 years proven success in development (foundation and corporate grants and giving required).
  • Ability to describe fundraising needs and to prioritize fundraising activities.
  • Successful experience and aptitude for seeking out and developing new relationships.
  • Superb oral and written communication skills, as verified during interviews and writing samples.
  • Proven ability to communicate persuasively and translate complex information into action-oriented information for external audiences.
  • Relationships with decision-makers at relevant foundation and corporate giving agencies.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet strict deadlines.
  • High motivation and ability to work independently as well as within cross-functional teams.
  • Commitment to quality work, continuous improvement, and accountability.

  • Ability to work with highly skilled, experienced staff as a facilitator and collaborator.
  • Familiarity with Requests for Proposals (RFP) guidelines and the various budget and policy issues that must be addressed with their submission.
  • Knowledge of federal and state regulations and issues.
  • Experience and aptitude for business planning and financial analysis including strong database management and related computer skills.
  • Computer literate and inclined with knowledge of PC software, database management, Powerpoint and web search.
  • Background in health, education, or human services preferred.
  • Exceptional administrative, organizational, and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and independently plan, organize, coordinate and perform work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved.
  • Ability to maintain positive and professional demeanor.
  • Ability to work fast and under pressure with flexible hours including some nights and weekends.

Salary Range:         Commensurate with experience. Full time. Grade Level 6. Exempt.
